The School

Founded in 1969, Polytech Clermont-Ferrand (formerly CUST) is one of the oldest engineering university course in France. Internal to the University Clermont Auvergne, Polytech Clermont-Ferrand is a founder member of the Polytech network, which development fits into this local, national and international structure.

Key figures

  • 1000 engineers-students and engineers-appentices
  • 6000 graduated engineers
  • 6 engineering diplomas
  • 80 university lecturer and researcher
  • 15% of the course delivered by almost 150 industrial contributors
  • 10 associated research laboratories
  • 1 innovation and technological transfer platform.

An operational and simple organisation

According to the article L. 713-9 of the code of educatin, Polytech Clermont-Ferrand is an internal school to the University Clermont Auvergne ; also founder of the Polytech Network.

The school Council defines the policy. It meets 3 or 4 times a year. Its composition consists in representatives of the industrial world, school teachers, members of the administrative and technical staff, and students. The Council makes decisions about the major organisations of the school, the organisation of the studies and assessment. It is aware of the activities of research and transfer concerning technology.

The Council also elects the Director, the Assistant Director, as well as the Studies Director. It votes on the budget and is toldinformed of the way it is used and if respected or not. It establishes and modifies, if needed, the internal rules. It deliberates upon all the strategic evolutions about the school and the university site in its local and national context.

The Direction Council is composed of the Director, the Assistant Director, the Studies Director, the administrative supervisor, technical supervisor and communication supervisor. They assist the Director whit his functions and responsibilities. They also prepare the office meetings and meet twice a month.

Members of the Direction Council and departments’supervisors make up the Bureau. The Director presides over it, and it meets twice a month during the period of university education. It is the real executive body of the school, giving cooperation between the different departments, and where all the startegic orientations are debated. Every meeting gives birth to a report, broadcasted on the intramural website.

The department’s councils bring together all the teachers of one department. The department’s supervisors preside over the councils, whose task is to coordinate the roles and actions of everyone, organise the teachings and discuss the strategic orientations of the specialities.

The improvement Council is a school transversal authoriry in which industrials, economic world representatives, teachers and students evaluate the global relevance of the training courses provided, but also anticipate the evolutions concerning job prospects and finally recommend some work orientations.

Answer to the companies’ needs

Delivering five different diplomas via initial or continuous education, « Biological Engineering », « Civil Engineering », « Electrical Engineering », « Mathematical and Modelling Engineering », « Physical Engineering », and another via apprenticeship, – « Engineering of Production Systems » - Polytech Clermont-Ferrand nearly trained 6000 engineers since its creation.

The parternships’ policy with national and international institutions gives the school an opportunity to take part in some large-scale projects like European ones, most commonly in close link with the two regional competitiveness poles : « Céréales Vallée » and « Viaméca ». Many companies have been created by young newly graduated engineers ; and the 2000 months of placement in the industrial field every year, as well as the abundant offers for job postions of associate laboratories show how lively and efficient the school is in terms of industrial and entrepreneurial relations.

A guiding, visionary and original educational outline

Being an engineer is a function and a job at the same time. Starting from this point, the CUST understood 40 years ago the necessity to train the Polytech engineers towards three complementary dimensions : the fundamental sciences, the sciences of technonoly, engineering and computering, and finally the human and social sciences.

  • The first one enables the acquiring of the vital knowledge and fundamental scientific culture to make a good engineer. It doesn’t have much to do with the speciality chosen, explaining why Polytech Clermont-Ferrand’s strength is to give the opportunity to young people aiming for different engineers diplomas to pursue their scientific lessons together. This diversity is now more than ever, a guarantee of success, in a multipolar world where complexity often comes from a very strong interweaving between disciplines.
  • The second more technological dimension aims for the learning of skills linked to the jobs of the engineer inside of the the speciality chosen by the student. It’s precisely at this moment that the professionals who regularly participate to the teachings intervene a lot. All the project-based education is developed around this aspect of the training course ; representing an important part of it.
  • The third one is about the human and humanist dimension of the Polytech engineers’ course. Lessons about communication techniques, languages, economics, law, projects management, are provided of course, but also psychosociology, epistemology, etc … Many opening disciplines which rise the art of being an engineer and promote it throughout its human, societal and managerial dimensions.

This organisation, existing since the birth of the CUST, was renewed and reimagined several times but still possesses all of his relevance and youth, in order to train engineers ready to plunge into solving the technological challenges of modern times.

A booming national and international visibility thanks to the Polytech network

The rallying of the school within the Polytech network (13 Polytech schools and more than 10% of the engineers trained in France) is a major element, which contributes to the structure of the school’s life. This structuring also conveys a very powerful potential of progress and development. It is finally the guarantee that the school stays entirely commited in the the national and international evolutions concerning the engineers’ courses. Its integration within the Polytech Network determines all the procedures concerning the students recruitment, whether national (85% outside of the Auvergne region) or international, the educational organisation (now subject to a common studies regulation), the international relations, the partnerships with big industry groups or the school’s promotion and communciation.
